A good example of an invasive and a stewardship action are the construction and usage of hydro dams. The ironic thing about creating a dam is that, yes we are creating clean energy neither harmful fumes nor toxic wastes but we are invading habitats of fish and other aquatic species. Dams slow river currents and may cause damage. Rivers tend to have a constant temperature and dam reservoirs have a type of layered temperature meaning that it does not have a constant temperature, which can cause harm to certain species. Loss riverbanks and river beds are often due to water exiting a dam tube. A large dam can lead to the loss of entire ecosystems.
Though dams have negatives effects it does however possess good qualities. For example, hydroelectricity is a major source of power, the power that is generated by a dam is clean and environmentally friendly. The energy that is being produced by hydro dams is clearly reducing our reliance on fossil fuel as the primary source of energy.

ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you when you stated that we are both invasive species & stewards of the world. Though we take initiative & do cetain things to create a better environment for both us & the biodiversity, it can sometimes result in having negative effects as well. Just as in the example you used of hydro dams & hydro electricity. We were created to be stewards of the world, but just as you also said, it will take a lot of money, time, & effort in order for us to reverse all the negative that we created, & become proper stewards of this world.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we, humans are both invasive and stewards of the world. Even in the beginning, we started building things and structures that disturb other organisms residing near or in them. Even now, we are still greatly disturbing them but fortunately, we have toned it down close to a minimum. We are becoming aware that we are not the only ones living on this planet. There are also other organisms that needed to be safe in their own planet. And I believe that as humans, and as the most intelligent and advanced species, we should protect the others.
ReplyDeleteI do agree when you say that we are being both stewards and invasive species. But i think that we are being more invasive than we are being stewards. We humans put ourselves first before other animals or another living beings. We try to make ourselves as comfortable as possible before looking at the consequences. Your example of a dam shows how humans can be both invasive and stewards of the world. We are different from other animals due to our brain and it is the same brain that differentiates us from other animals. If we had a lower intellect, we would co-exist with other animals peacefully. But God made us so that we take care of the world as caretakers not destroyers.
ReplyDeleteAlong with the other people that commented on this blog, I agree that we are both stewards and an invasive species. I like the example of the dam, but I think that dams have more of a negative impact than we can afford. Most are built on ecologically significant rivers, and a vast area of land is destroyed to make room for the dam and its power-lines. As well, a large are must be flooded to create a reservoir for the damn to function properly, and this flooding destroys large area of land. This disrupts the speed of water flow in rivers, allowing sediments to collect in places they shouldn’t, and water to become less fresh and more stagnant. We still need a more eco-friendly solution that will benefit the environment more than it harms it, and be just as effective as other forms of creating electricity. I liked this blog because it was well written and reminds me of history last year. When learning about the aboriginals, we learned how in Quebec, a large area of significant land for hunting and for the ecosystem was destroyed so the government could build a dam on the native’s land.
ReplyDeleteI greatly agree with you comments on how we are slightly steward yet more invasive to the earth. In my blog i focused more on the fact that we are invansive to the earth, how we pollute our air, damadge our water and create material that we cannot recycle, or reuse. But you have stated that we are just a bit more steward since we are trying to make sources of energy cleaner and more sufficient to us humans. But my question is for how long ?, Are we really gonna have a major act on this, whwere we will be so close on eliminating the pollution and damadge that we do to earth. You are right that would take millions probably billions, that seem like no govrnment in the world is willing to invest on to try to fix. In regards to the economic troubles they are at.
ReplyDeleteI think that we are helping ourselves way to much, and need to think of the environment. We as humans live together with these animals and need to think of them as partners rather than tools.
ReplyDeleteWe have a ton of energy sources, such as power plants, and wind bines. Yet we are so greedy that we want more. I think that we could get rid of a few dams and save some sea creatures.
Possibly for me to eat :)
Yeah, i agree completely with what you have stated. By trying to be eco-friendly in one aspect we end up ruining the environment in another aspect. the main reason we should protect our environment is because humanity will need it in the future. I find that kind of sad because humanity will only protect what ensures it's survival. Anyways, it's our greed thats killing nature. Also, as humans we tend to not look before we leap, then try to make amends later, but our amends never quite repair things perfectly. I suppose it's the thought that counts.
ReplyDeleteAnyways Great article, bonus marks for fish. I like fish.
Hey Timothy, I like when you wrote: "The process of making designer babies can reduce the baby's chances of being born with several serious diseases like Down Syndrome, rare blood disorders, etc. This ensures the continuity of our species and a healthy community."
ReplyDeleteIt makes me wonder if we will ever have a loss of doctors because of this... Thus creating a downfall in the economy and plenty of people around the world would be left without jobs. Since major health issues wouldn't be a problem, you'd probably end up going to a tiny shack for medicine for colds and such. All in all, I think your blog has many good points about things I knew (which you helped me brush up on), and things I didn't know.
